Luna Chris: a game about a space cow and a macaroni gun

I've started making a game. Luna Chris is a mobile-first Phaser 3 run-and-gun on tiny spherical planets, and you can play it here as it grows.

I’ve started making a game. It’s called Luna Chris, and you can play it here while I build it.

The story

Luna Chris was the galaxy’s most decorated astronaut until the space race burned him out. Now he flips flapjacks on a dusty space-ranch, in a “Kiss the Cook” apron over his NASA suit, with his best friend Bessie: a zero-gravity cow whose udders produce Mad Cheese.

Then the Roquefort Rodents, alien rats in junk armour, crash through the barn roof and tractor-beam Bessie away. She’s the only cow who can re-cheese their dying home world. Chris twists the pepper grinder on the mantelpiece, the wall flips round, and he grabs the Mac-Laster 3000.

How it plays

You run, jump and blast your way around small planets, and gravity always pulls towards the middle, so you can run all the way round. It’s landscape only and made for a phone first: left thumb to run, right thumb to jump. The gun aims and fires by itself, so all you have to worry about is moving and dodging.

There’s a jetpack too. Tap jump to hop, let go in the air, then hold jump again to thrust until the fuel runs out. It fills back up when you land.

On a keyboard it’s A and D (or the arrow keys) to run and Space to jump.

What’s in it so far

  • A comic-style intro that tells the story above. Tap to skip it.
  • The Mac-Laster 3000, a drill crossed with a pasta extruder that fires a spiral of macaroni shells.
  • Level 1, The Gruyère Globe: a cratered cheese moon with waves of space-mice and Gouda-Golems, then a boss fight with Crusty Croque Monsieur, a toasted-sandwich drop-ship that rains hot ham.

All the art is placeholder for now, drawn in code. I want the gameplay to be fun before anything gets properly drawn.

What’s next

  • More cheese guns: the Swiss-Shot, the Fondue Flamethrower and the Gouda Grenade launcher.
  • Level 2, Gorgonzola Gulch, a toxic blue-cheese swamp where mould spores mess with gravity.
  • Sound and music.
  • Real art, in a hand-drawn cartoon style with bold outlines and big faces.

How it’s built

It’s plain JavaScript and Phaser 3 with no build step. Every push to the repo deploys straight to GitHub Pages, and the page here just frames that, so whatever I push is what you play. The version number in the corner tells you which build you’ve got.

I’ll keep adding to this as the game grows.
